Many SME leaders feel trapped. They know they need to measure to improve, but they believe the only answer is a costly, complex MES (Manufacturing Execution System): months of implementation, tens of thousands of euros and a pile of complexity. There is another path. A faster, cheaper, leaner path you can start this same week.
The MES trap
The classic MES path means servers, integrations, external consultants and 6 to 18 months before the first useful datum. The lean path means a sheet of paper, a pen and a spreadsheet: first data and first improvements in under two weeks, at almost zero cost, using the knowledge your team already has.
Your essential productivity kit
Three tools are enough to start:
- The smart production log. A simple sheet where the operator notes stoppages (with their reason) and output. Simple, fast, friction-free.
- The spreadsheet that thinks. It centralizes the logs and uses a Pareto chart so the sheet "shouts" which is your biggest time thief.
- The micro-experiment. Once the main problem is identified, launch one small improvement action and measure its impact. Learn, repeat.
Availability x performance = productivity
Availability times performance is a partial productivity indicator, not complete OEE. OEE also includes quality: good units divided by total units. Use scheduled production time, validated ideal rate and actual good output on the same basis. The full calculator below includes all three factors.
Why it works
This is not theory. It works because the log makes stoppages visible the same week, the Pareto points at the biggest time thief, and every micro-experiment is measured against your own baseline. No software, no consultants, no waiting.
Your action plan
- Today: put a stoppage log on one machine and start filling it in.
- In 7 days: centralize the week in a spreadsheet and draw the Pareto of stoppage reasons.
- In 30 days: run your first micro-experiment against the number-one cause and measure the change.
Free tool: OEE calculator for SMEs
The bilingual spreadsheet records production and calculates availability, performance, quality and OEE. Its summary groups minutes by the main stop reason; it is not a complete Pareto of every loss.
